Ryan Meyer

Where do you attend school and what activities are you involved in?

I graduated from SUNY Buffalo State in New York, where I double-majored in English and Writing. I worked in the writing center and was the poetry editor of the school’s literary magazine (Elm Leaves).

I then graduated from George Mason University with an MFA in poetry. There, I also worked in the writing center and was a reader and editor for two literary journals (Phoebe and So to Speak).

What have your teaching opportunities been outside of Fairfax Collegiate?

As a college student, I tutored in the school’s writing center. I first started teaching in grad school at George Mason University, where I also worked in the writing center. After graduating from George Mason, and before moving to New York, I taught for a couple years at Northern Virginia Community College.

I currently teach at SUNY Schenectady in New York, where I am also a writing tutor. Before that, I taught at SUNY Adirondack.

What subjects have you taught with Fairfax Collegiate in the past?

" Writing, reading, test prep, debate, and public speaking"

What sort of experience have you had in the subject you’ll be teaching this summer?

When it comes to reading and writing, I have a lot of experience as both a student and a teacher. I double-majored in English and Writing as a college student, then focused on poetry in graduate school, where I first started teaching. Ever since, I have been teaching reading and writing classes ranging from elementary school to college.

What excites you about teaching and working with students?

As much as I enjoy teaching at the college level during the school year, there is something refreshing and energizing about returning to work with younger writers each summer. I especially enjoy the opportunity to help young students become more comfortable and confident as writers.

Outside of work, what are some hobbies you enjoy?

In addition to reading and writing, some of my hobbies include crosswords, basketball, and music.
